Success at SAF Convention

In early November, fourteen students from the ISU Forestry Club/Society of American Foresters Student Chapter attended the Society of American Foresters Annual Convention in Madison Wisconsin.  Their attendance was facilitated by support from NREM, along with the Dean and Ann Einspahr Travel Fund.

In partnership with the Society of American Foresters, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a hiring event for student intern and recent graduate positions available in forestry, natural resource management, and biology.  SEVEN of the Iowa State students were offered positions across the country with the U.S. Forest Service during this event!

The photograph includes these students, along with Thomas Tidwell, Chief of the U.S. Forest Service (center) and ISU alumni and current U.S. Forest Service employee James McFarland (left, B.S. Forestry, 2005).  James was essential in facilitating ISU student hiring success at this event.  He and his spouse Ashely (Wendt) McFarland (M.S. Environmental Science, 2007) traveled to ISU two weeks prior to the convention to attend a Club meeting and mentor students for success at the hiring event.  His strong advocacy for our program is making a huge impact in the student’s careers.

In addition to attending professional presentations, the students also interacted with ISU alumni at the ISU Alumni Reception, and networked with forestry students and professionals from across the nation.  (images below)
