How does the placement of prairie strips affect water quality gains?

While this is still an active area of research, there are a few guiding principles we can draw upon to try to maximize water quality gains.

  • For potential pollutants that are moving with water across the land surface, we want to make sure we provide the greatest protection – the area in prairie strips – where we have the most runoff. In other words, we make sure we are providing greatest protection in areas that receive the most water flow.

  • Placing the leading edge of our prairie strips perpendicular to the primary pathway of water flow provides the best chance to slow water flow, improve water infiltration, and remove any potential pollutants that are moving with the water.
