  • An alumni of our Forest Biology MS program, Dr. Fabrice DeClerck, will speak at the Global Program's Feeding the World Seminar Series. Dr. DeClerck serves as Senior Scientist, Agricultural Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, at Bioversity International. He will speak on the topic:

    “Food system transformations for sustainability and health”

    Dr. DeClerck is also EAT Science Director with the Stockholm Resilience Center at Stockholm University. 

  • Rosemary Galdamez, an incoming senior at North High School in Des Moines, Iowa, is one of 19 George Washington Carver Summer Research Internship Program interns this year. The high school student completed a research project with Carver Program mentor Thomas Isenhart, a professor in the department of natural resource ecology and management.

  • Tyler Harms (IDNR) is the co-organizer of a symposium for the 78th Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference scheduled for Milwaukee, WI, January 28-31, 2018.  The symposium is entitled, Ducks to Dickcissels: Collaboration for the Conservation of Multiple Species in Grasslands.  Kelly VanBeek (USFWS) is the primary organizer.

  • Dr. Richard Lindroth, Vilas Distinguished Achievement and Sorenson Professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was elected Fellow in the Entomological Society of America in 2017. He is an international leader in the disciplines of chemical ecology, plant-insect interactions, and global change ecology. He has also provided leadership in university administration, having served as Associate Dean for Research and Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at UW-Madison.

    Congratulations to Natural Resource Ecology and Management Professor Emeritus and former IA Cooperative and Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Leader, Dr. Erwin Klaas on being awarded Story County Iowa's Citizen of the Year!   • Forestry Camp History goes live

    The outstanding NREM/ENT BioIogy IT team has done it again! 

    The Forestry Camp was the topic of this week's Biology IT sprint and the result is a list of Forestry Camp locations, some photos, and Camp leadership going back to the beginning; 1914.  If you have photos, slides, and/or Camp reports please turn them into the NREM office in 339 and we will get them scanned and linked to the web page.  More to come on this effort this summer, but it is off to a great start!

  • Grace Vaziri and Jim Adelman are excited about science.  So excited they created Nerd Nite, Des Moines - an evening of talks, music, beverages, and cake!
    Nerd Nite brings together scientists, artists, and professionals in a low-key environment to exchange ideas they are excited and passionate about and have a great time.

    Join Grace and Jim on Saturday, May 13 at the Des Moines Social Club at 5 pm. Tickets are $10 and doors open at 4:30 p.m.

  • NREM Graduate Student Awarded National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

    Congratulations to Maggie Jones, NREM Graduate Assistant, on recently being awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. 

    The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Maggie was one of 2,000 awardees from over 13,000 applications for the 2017 competition.

  • Congratulations to Miranda Furrer for being CALS Career Services Young Alum of the Month!  Miranda graduated in 2013 with a B.S. in Animal Ecology.

  • 2006 Animal Ecology Alumni, Michael Miller saved a fisherman's life in Clarke County, Iowa last weekend.  Michael now works as a Conservation Officer for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

  • ISU Field Courses are being offered THIS SUMMER in Montana! Join us Thursday, February 2, at 6:30 p.m. in 118 Horticulture Hall for an information session about courses being offered this summer in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. 

     

    The courses being offered are:

    Wildlife Population Methods (3 cr.): June 10 - July 3 Forest Fire Fuels Measurement (2 cr.): June 10 - June 25 Field Ecology (4 cr.): July 8 - August 6
