Open to any currently enrolled ISU Graduate students with NREM listed as their Home Department. Major may be:

  • Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
  • Environmental Science
  • Fisheries Biology
  • Forestry
  • Sustainable Agriculture
  • Wildlife Biology
  • Wildlife Ecology

Application Procedure

As a graduate student in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, you will be given access to a scholarship form on Canvas entitled “NREM Graduate Student Scholarships”. This contains information on NREM scholarship opportunities available to graduate students and instructions on how to apply. The application will consist of completion of an “assignment” in which you provide general information, including a short essay in which you describe your graduate research. To apply for the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) J.N. “Ding” Darling Awards, you will submit the general application, plus additional supporting materials to demonstrate accomplishment in conservation communication and scholarly achievement.

General Application Scholarship Opportunities

The general application will qualify you for consideration of the following scholarship opportunities, with the caveat that some scholarships are intended by donor agreement only for students pursuing degrees in specified disciplines, as indicated parenthetically:

Carl Rise Teaching Fellowship in Forestry (Forestry Master’s students)
This fellowship is open to master’s-level graduate students in Forestry with a 3.0 grade point average or higher who are active in student affairs and show exceptional academic promise.

C.E. Farnsworth Memorial Fund (all NREM graduate students)
Applicant must be a graduate student in NREM who has demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students with outstanding scholarship and showing promise of completing degree.

Elaine Boge Scholarship (Animal Ecology or Forestry)
The Elaine Boge Scholarship was established in 2013 to honor Elaine Boge’s appreciation for natural resources. Ms. Boge, who graduated with a degree in Biology from Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa, was a nature enthusiast who farmed with her family and maintained a small hobby farm of her own. Scholarship recipients are to be students in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, majoring in Animal Ecology or Forestry. The scholarship is open to all class levels, including graduate students.

Evered Ihrig Memorial Scholarship (Forestry)
This scholarship is open to all Forestry Undergraduate and Graduate Students. Preference will be given to students graduating from high schools in Johnson County, IA or those contiguous thereto, including: Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Louisa, Linn, Muscatine, and Washington Counties or persons having some degree of family relationship to the late Charles Leslie Ihrig or Wenona Ihrig. Selection is based on financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office at ISU.

Florence E. and Wendell H. Harmon Endowed Research Fellowship (Forestry)
The Florence E. and Wendell H. Harmon Endowed Research Fellowship in Forestry Management was established in 1999 by Florence and Wendell Harmon. This award is open to graduate students pursuing an education in forestry.

INHF J. N. "Ding" Darling Scholarship (All NREM graduate students)
This scholarship is open to all NREM students. Applicant must show exemplary conservation communication and scholarly achievement. Examples of your work in this area should be described in your application or included as supporting material.

INHF J. N. "Ding" Darling Scholarship, Sherry Fisher Award (All NREM graduate students)
Awarded to the outstanding J. N. "Ding" Darling INHF Scholarship applicant. Examples of your work in this area should be described in your application or included as supporting material.

Kenneth Carlander Memorial Graduate Scholarship (Fisheries)
Applicant must be an Animal Ecology graduate student enrolled in the Fisheries Biology program and have a cumulative minimum G.P.A. of 3.5. Preference will be given to those applicants who have publications in-press or have been published in a professional journal. Preference will also be given to those who have previous employment experience in Wildlife / Fisheries Biology and is a member of the American Fisheries Association. This scholarship is renewable.

LaVon Tostenson Award (Fisheries, Wildlife Conservation, Ecology, or Management)
Applicant must be currently conducting graduate research in Fisheries, Wildlife Conservation, Ecology, or Management. Preference given to students whose research is oriented toward game species of fish, birds or mammals and/or their habitat.

Ray Buresh Scholarship (Animal Ecology or Forestry)
The Ray Buresh Scholarship was established in 2013 by the estate of Elaine D. Boge. Scholarship recipients are to be student in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, with majors in Animal Ecology or Forestry. The scholarship is open to all class levels, including graduate students.

External Scholarship Opportunities

Dr. Keith McNurlen Award
The Dr. Keith McNurlen Award is gifted by the Izaak Walton League for graduate students enrolled full-time in the Iowa State University Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management. Students must be conducting research in conservation, fisheries, wildlife biology, or limnology. Preference is given to students conducting research in Iowa. NOTE: This is an external award, with applications solicited annually and submitted directly to the local Izaak Walton League Chapter.
