Join the NREM Freshman Learning Community

The Freshman Learning Community...

is a residential based program.  Students are required to live on the fourth floor Willow Hall.  This allows students the benefit of living with people who are taking the same classes as one another.  It also gives a greater sense of community to develop close friendships and networks.

The Goals...

of the learning community include developing your study skills, creating a strong sense of belonging within the department and the university, providing a positive social setting and improving your time management skills.

What’s happening with the NREM Freshmen Learning Community?

The freshmen learning community experiences a lot of exciting things.  Early in the fall we visit a local prairie to learn about native plants and the animals that inhabit Iowa’s early landforms.  We also visit a wetland and learn about the structure and functions of wetlands and identified specific inhabitants who live in this location.  Students also visit the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines for a behind the scenes look at zoo keeping and animal care.  In the spring we visit the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.  Members were able to tour the Desert Dome, Aquarium, Giraffe Complex and Cat Complex among others. While taking these tours students get up close to many types of animals, they learn a little about how the zoo works and the daily responsibilities of a zoo keeper.  Depending on the interests of the group, we also go camping, fishing, snow-tubing and attended sports and cultural events.

We also meet on a weekly basis to discuss classes, plan events, host speakers of interest  and just check-in with the mentors and coordinator.  This is our NREM 111, 1-credit learning community class.

How do I sign up?

The first step is to choose Willow Hall as your preferred resident hall when completing your housing contract. This should allow you to then choose the NREM Learning Community.  The second step will be completed when you come for orientation in June.
