    Title: Insect Biodiversity in Prairie and Wetland Habitats

    Instructors: Josh Vanderwiel, Jessica Riojas, Jacqueline Boorom, Tessa Dall

    Summary: Students explore a wetland and prairie, and learn about characteristics of the diverse insects living in in these habitats.  We will also discuss why insects are important to humans, and consequences of habitat loss to insect survival and biodiversity.

    Title: Prairie Plant Communities and Arthropod Diversity

    Instructors: Julie Carlson and Heije Xu

    Summary: We will investigate the influence of plant diversity on arthropod diversity in grassland ecosystems. Students will learn how habitat diversity affects biodiversity, how humans effect change on habitats and biodiversity, and why biodiversity matters to them.

    Title: How Pollution Affects Wetland Ecosystems

    Instructors: Quin Shingai, Taylor Chansler, and Sara Runyan

    Summary: In this activity we will investigate effects of trash and other forms of pollution on wetland ecosystems. Students will learn about how pollution affect animals, how toxins enter the food chain, and how people may be affected.  Next Generation Science Standard addressed: K-ESS3-2 Earth’s Systems (ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems)

    Ecology of Ada Hayden Heritage Park (Sunday, October 23 – 2:00-4:00 pm)

    Are you interested in learning more about animals, plants, and ecology of Ada Hayden Heritage Park?  Please join Iowa State University students and investigate habitats and observe inhabitants of this special place.  People of all ages are invited to attend this event, and opportunities will be available to actively participate in ecological studies.  Our group will meet at 2:00 p.m. in the semi-circular parking lot adjacent to Harrison Road and Stone Brooke Road (located at the west side of Ada Hayden Heritage Park – see accompanying photograph.

    Field Ecology Day – Iowa State University and Gilbert Elementary School

    Four teams of Iowa State University students will conduct ecological studies with first grade students from Gilbert Elementary School at Ada Hayden Heritage Park on October 21, 2016 (12:10-1:10 pm). 

    We will convene at the semi-circular parking lot, located at the conjunction of Harrison and Stonebrooke Roads (at the west end of the park). 

    Students will be divided into four groups of approximately equal numbers of students, and each group will participate in one of the activities described below.  Each activity will have a duration of 45 minutes.
