"Ding" Darling (1876-1962), a cartoonist, and conservationist, persuaded Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) and the Iowa Fish and Game Commission (now Iowa Department of Natural Resources) to join in a cooperative research and training program for wildlife biologists, putting up $9,000 of his own money. Thus, pioneered the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. Later he was appointed Chief of the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey where he spearheaded the funding of the federal program of Cooperative Wildlife Research Units.
