Design of the experiment:

• Randomized block design, originally with 12 treatments and four blocks.
• Plots are 50 x 50 m.
• In 2003, a fifth block of mature forest was added to serve as a reference.
• In 2004, four transects in abandoned pasture were added, also for reference.
