Doug joined the ISU Forestry Department as an Associate Scientist/Adjunct Professor in August, 1998.
He was appointed as an Assistant Professor on July 1, 1999.

Doug founded DJM Enterprises, L.C. in April 2004. The company currently has two divisions, Midwest Fiber Consultants, specializing in services to the wood and natural fiber industries, and MicroWorld Images, focused on products and services for informal science education.
