Research

Dr. Quist’s research interests are fairly broad; however, all of his research focuses on issues that have direct relevance to the management of fish and their habitats. As such, his research almost always includes collaborations with biologists from state and federal management agencies. Some of his recent work has focused on determining how abiotic (e.g., habitat characteristics) and biotic (e.g., predator-prey relationships) factors interact to influence fish population dynamics (i.e., growth, recruitment, mortality) and fish assemblage structure (i.e., distribution and abundance patterns). Other recent research has focused on developing standardized methods for sampling fish and habitat in streams, developing indices for use in fisheries management (e.g., growth indices), and evaluating the role of water development and nonnative species on the conservation and management of sport and nongame fishes.
