Teaching

My teaching focuses on Dendrology, a four-credit course offered each fall. Enrollment is about 40 students and the course is part of the core curriculum for forestry and animal ecology majors. I also mentor and advise many students outside of class. My goals are for students to gain competency in woody plant identification and in understanding management issues facing the major North American forest regions, and to learn through cooperation and collaboration, in the process building professional skills that they need to succeed in jobs and graduate school.

Research

My research focuses on how to restore ecological function to the landscape. I have three ongoing components of research on restoration of forest diversity and function:  1) establishing baseline data on the diversity, composition and function of the best quality forests remaining in Iowa; 2) documenting the loss of species and function with forest degradation and their lack in newly established forests; 3) the series of steps involved with re-establishing species and forest function. Because restoration success is best assessed by evaluating both animal use and the plant community, animal use of restored habitats another line of research that I am pursuing.
